Overview
Built on the banks of the Sunstream branch of the Argent River, Hartfell is a small city known as "The City of Life."
This title comes from the city's ethos that elevates concepts like glory, love, and passion, and honor. The most prominent faith found in the city is that of Vari, and the citizenry embraces a romantic worldview. Festivals and tournaments are common, and tales of a glorious past dance in the minds of young and old alike. The City's moniker has taken on a new meaning in recent years, as the use or sale of Remnants within the city is explicitly banned.
This verve is endorsed by the deeply conservative ruling family, who seek to keep Hartfell's traditions alive amongst a rapidly changing world. In some ways, Hartfell embraces new learning as it home to one of the Vale's most respected universities.
The young Duke Leopold does not see technology itself as a threat to tradition, but rather as a bastion to help the city keep up with the economic power generated by Remnants in Solstice and other parts of the Vale. Yet this innovation is tightly constrained to production, construction, and warfare. Culture - what matters most to the Hart family - is still driven by century old traditions and faith.
Magic
The use of arcane magic is less strictly regulated in Solstice, however:
Necromantic and enchantment magic requires the approval of the Duke.
Resurrection magic is illegal, as per agreements with Solstice.

The Twinned River
A Modern Marvel
The Argent River flows from north to south, starting near Silverstone and growing far wider as it is joined by other tributaries. Sixty years ago after a brutal conflict with the giants to the southwest, engineers in Hartfell decided to split the river into two channels. Hartfell sits on the eastern river, but now there is another branch a few miles to the west. This area of the river is simply called "The Twinned River." The western river is called the Moonflow and the eastern the Sunstream, an allusion to the Twin Gods Riema and Ameir.
The Twinned Rivers rejoin back before continuing southward. This engineering has created a small island that the city itself is built upon, making it an exceptionally defensive location. This defense has become a massive boon to the city in recent years with the increased emergence of Embers from the Cinderfall Woods to the west. Most citizens are able to go about their lives in a relatively normal fashion.
